What aural concoction do you get when you combine trippy, downtempish electronica of the Austrian electronic-duo Paul Wallner and Anna Müller – HVOB (Her Voice Over Boys) with the indie rock goodness, courtesy of British musician Winston Marshall, banjoist and the lead guitarist of the Grammy Award-winning British folk-rock band Mumford & Sons? Blame Game would be the answer.
Featuring sedate vocals that seem to slowly float over deep basslines accompanied by hypnotic reverb-driven guitar riffs to build into a mesmerizing electronic eargasm that’s hard to switch off, “Blame Game” in our opinion was one of the best collaborative songs of 2017 and an enthralling highlight of “Silk”, HVOB’s third album.
With the obscure lyrics pointing to a tragic romance, we chose Argentinian born French filmmaker Gaspar Noé’s controversial 2015 arthouse 3D movie “LOVE”, with its nonlinear flashback style as the perfect imagery for our second lyric music video. While “Love” may not be the best love stories ever told on cinema, it’s certainly an intoxicating commentary on love, intimacy and sex and not hyped-up artporn as many critics would want us to believe. Besides, the brilliant, moody photography orchestrated by Belgian cinematographer Benoît Debie is alone worth the price of admission. In fact, it’s what made us choose “Love” over other films which we had initially shortlisted for this track.
We won’t spoil it more so have a watch and let us know what you feel.
HVOB and Winston Marshall – BLAME GAME – Song Lyrics
I could have been more honest baby
I could have been more straight
I could have been more everything
Now it’s all too late
But don’t you try to overanalyze?
Every silence, every word
See you are gonna try and hurt me now
Is that my just reward
Leave it all to me
I’m on the nerve this to live
Is there any true love?
Any true love?
Leave it all to me
I’m on the nerve this to live
Is there any true love?
Any true love?
(We are playing the blame game)
(We are playing the blame game)
(We are playing the blame game)
I could have been more honest
I could have been more straight
I could have been more of everything
(We are playing the blame game)
Now it’s all too late
(We are playing the blame game)
But don’t you try to overanalyze?
Every silence, every word
(We are playing the blame game)
See you are gonna try and hurt me now
Is that my just reward
Leave it all to me
I’m on the nerve this to live
Is there any true love?
Any true love?
P.S – Its interesting to note that Youtube and Shazam tags Dark Sun (Never Goodby) by Raaben Schwarz for this music. Our query to HVOB about this reference elicited no response.
